The
Butter Robot

"What is my purpose?" A real-life replica of the Butter Robot from Rick and Morty. The wiring is a mess, but the existential dread is fully functional.

Project summary

I originally thought about 3D printing the entire chassis, but ended up just printing the claw. The rest of the body is literally old Lego bricks, electrical tape, and a few micro servos I had lying around on my desk.

An ESP32 handles all the logic, driving three servos to articulate the head and arms. The hardware is completely jury-rigged, so most of the time went into the code — tuning the servo sweep timing to mimic that slow, depressed droop he does in the show when he realizes his only purpose in life is passing butter.

The parts list

  • ESP32 microcontroller ×1
  • Custom 3D-printed claw ×1
  • MG90 servos ×2
  • SG90 servo ×1
  • Legos a handful
  • Electrical tape way too much
